Ana Elisa Lohmann is a medical oncologist who started a fellowship in breast cancer research at Mount Sinai Hospital in August 2013. In July 2014, she started her Masters in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Dr. Pamela Goodwin. She is planning to transfer to a PhD in the winter and her thesis will be related to obesity/diabetes/metabolic markers and breast cancer.
Her research hopes to improve the understanding of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in breast cancer. CTCs are cancer cells that have broken away from the tumor and are circulating in the blood stream. There is growing evidence that detecting CTCs can predict disease progression and may be helpful in guiding cancer therapy for breast cancer that has spread.
The purpose of her study is to examine if CTCs are associated with other factors, such as metabolic factors (glucose, insulin, leptin) that are also known to be related to disease progression.
