Emergency physician Dr. Don Melady has devoted his career to developing more effective methods of caring for older patients. Throughout his career, he has educated emergency staff in Canada and around the world on best practices in geriatric emergency medicine (EM), Improving the well-being of patients far beyond the walls of Mount Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Melady was among the first Canadian emergency physicians to focus on geriatric EM. With Dr. Melady as its geriatric EM lead, the Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Centre has become internationally renowned for delivering innovative and effective care to older adults. Mount Sinai has the lowest rate in the GTA of hospital admission for older patients.
A member of the Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Medicine Institute, Dr. Melady has been instrumental in developing Mount Sinai’s comprehensive approach to caring for older emergency patients, which begins at the point of first contact.
Dr. Melady developed an online learning resource specifically to teach emergency department (ED) clinicians about issues in geriatric care in the ED. Originally launched in 2013, it remains the principal educational tool and is widely used in training programmes and for continuing education around the world. It has recently been revised and expanded.
This training is a core component of training for all Mount Sinai’s emergency doctors, nurses and other staff in the ED.
Aside from clinical education, Dr. Melady has literally written the book on “creating a geriatric ED.” His book, co-authored with an American colleague, and published by Cambridge University Press, is a practical guide to making system-level changes that benefit older patients.
Regarded as the pre-eminent expert in geriatric EM in Canada, Dr. Melady has been a driving force in the establishment of geriatric EM in both academic curricula and professional societies. Future chair holders will be leaders in developing better ways of caring for older emergency patients, and in driving change in emergency departments globally through education.
