The Cause

Mount Sinai Hospital and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, have come together to provide improved access for patients and their families to cutting-edge in-utero medical and surgical interventions for sick babies. With a world-renowned team of experts, the Ontario Fetal Centre (OFC) offers the best and most advanced care to some of the highest-risk pregnancies. The end-to-end care provided at the Ontario Fetal Centre (OFC) supports the patient and their family from the time of prenatal diagnosis, to fetal intervention, delivery, and long-term post-natal follow-up.

The OFC is also a teaching hub for Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists and fellows wishing to train in various fetal procedures. The OFC attracts and welcomes trainees from around the world, and encourages cross-discipline research collaboration to spur further innovations and discoveries that can translate to improved health for mothers and babies.

With your generosity, Swing for Sinai is able to continue to support the delivery of this specialized fetal care, to improve outcomes for families like Kathryn and Eddy.

At 24 weeks gestation, the couple received the devastating news that their unborn twins had a rare condition called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). In cases of TTTS, the blood flow through a shared placenta is unbalanced. This causes one twin to receive too much blood, and the other too little. In cases like this, the OFC team performs fetoscopic laser ablation in-utero surgery, substantially increasing both babies' chances for survival.

Today, Kathryn and Eddy's twins, Avery and Sloan, are thriving as they approach their first birthday. Their parents are grateful for the compassionate and professional care their family received at the OFC. “I'm not sure I'll ever be able to express the extent of my gratitude,” says Kathryn. “I've caught myself tearing up more than once, looking into our kids’ faces and thinking about how far they've come.”

Thank you for supporting the delivery of this kind of life-saving care through Swing for Sinai. To learn more about their story click here
